Monza explosion: Hamilton exposes Ferrari's blind spot – 'There are no fighting rules'

Ferrari left their home race at Monza with only 8 points. Not because of pace, strategy or a technical failure, but because their two drivers took each other out on the opening lap. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth. Charles Leclerc retired. For a team chasing a championship, the cost was enormous. Hamilton did not stop at blaming his teammate. He pointed directly at team principal Fred Vasseur, saying Ferrari lacked clear internal rules. The 41-year-old said: "When I was at Mercedes we had written fighting rules. Here there are no rules." The clash came at Curva 2 on the first lap. Hamilton said he was ahead at the apex and Leclerc pushed him off. He added that he always races clean and leaves space. But in a competitive environment, good intentions need to be backed by a clear framework. Hamilton also referenced his past battles with Nico Rosberg at Mercedes. There were tense moments, but he said the team's written rules helped control conflict. Ferrari have not done that. The problem is not just one incident. It is a cultural weakness. For years, I have learned that successful sports organisations need clarity. Ferrari has invested heavily in engineering but appears to rely on instinct when two competitive drivers race each other. No amount of telemetry or wind-tunnel time can solve a governance problem. A simple two-page document could define who has the right to space at the apex, and what happens when contact is made. What makes Monza so painful is that Ferrari had a golden chance to score strong points in front of their fans. Instead, they handed momentum to Mercedes and Red Bull. Vasseur must now step in. If he does nothing, the next fast circuit could produce another clash. Ferrari cannot afford to lose more points if they want to win the constructors' championship. The true lesson from Monza is about leadership. Hamilton and Leclerc are both extraordinary drivers, but they are different in age, role and ambition. A team principal must protect the team from such collisions by setting rules from the top. The data will not fix this. Only decisive management will.
